Great for Remodels!September 1, 2010 Tricia I purchased this software when I remodeled our kitchen and den this summer. It was a huge help and really fun. The software was not hard to use and somewhat intuitive. We were able to visualize the different ceiling options, room size, where to install appliances, window placement, paint colors and a ton more. We were even able to choose different furniture arrangement ideas. We only scratched the surface. I'm sure you could really go crazy on this design software. This is a must have for any remodel. Well worth the price. :)

I wasn't so sure about buying this product based on some polarized reviews on Amazon. Seemed everyone either loved the software or didn't like it at all. Well, I took a chance, and I'm really glad I did.
The HGTV home design software is a great value. It beats making mistakes with costly home improvement errors, and I found I was able to plan out my entire project from start to finish, right down to the costs of materials.
I think some people are under the misconception that you just push a few buttons in a program like this and the construction project more or less gets done for you. That's just not going to happen. There is a bit of patience required for any of these programs, I'd imagine. It's the power that they offer that make them just a little complex. I know because I've used other ones before, too. But it's well worth the reasonable learning curve - like I said, especially in this economy, where I can't really afford to get it wrong and make mistakes.
Anyways, great program. And the results were outstanding. (In case anyone cares, I was adding hardscape to the front of my house - a short retaining wall, pavers either side of the driveway, a bench, and some pilasters with lights. It turned out awesome - and it's all because I was able to envision the whole thing on the screen before I set out to the building supply store!)

I admit I was skeptical of home design software, thinking it'd be too technical and complex. Not so of HGTV Home Design and Remodeler. My wife has been wanting to redecorate our family room, and so in a moment of rare compliance on my part :-) I surprised her with a whole rendering of the new room. In literally 10 minutes I was able to open a photo taken with my digital camera and to change the paint color on the walls and the fabric on our sofa and chair. It gave us both a great idea of what the room would look like ... well, at least what it would look like before she goes putting her bric-a-brac all over the place. :-) Then we went out and bought the corresponding paint color (the software actually tells you what brand and paint number to buy) and slipcovers for the furniture (cheaper than reupholstering) and, voila, the room turned out exactly as we expected - and I was the hero (another rarity). Very impressive stuff. I haven't really gotten into all the 3D stuff yet, but it looks cool and so far is very easy to use.

The software was very easy to install and use. One of the most import features of any design software is combing the ease of setting the proper dimensions with intuitive software. In other words the ability to create a structure that is dimensionally correct quickly and easily with the proper design considerations. The HGTV Home Design & remodeling Suite 2.0 was excellent at this.
The software is incredibly intelligent and allows both the novice and experience designer the tools to build a replica of the existing structure and then remodel it. The wizards are a fantastic way to start and modify. Many of the other software programs for this task become very complex when trying to create a customized structure. The intelligence of the wizards in this software allows the designer to start with a basic structure and then easily modify it. This is a fantastic time saver and accelerates both the creation of the design and the learning process.
The most important capability for design software from the homeowner's perspective is the ability to view the proposed design. We want to see what it will look like. This is the other area that HGTV Home Design & Remodeling Suite 2.0 is superior.
The flexibility and response of the system are fantastic. The walk around and fly over capabilities are far superior to many other similar packages even on an old Pentium 4 system with 4 GB of memory running Windows XP. Other packages I have used took 1-2 minutes to render and then moving around was very painful. Add the ability to edit and change your design from the walk around view and the software truly becomes the premier design package.
In conclusion, I am a Do-It-Yourself home remodeler and have been using design software for home remodeling for more than 15 years. This is the easiest and most complete package I have used. I can sit down and in less than 30 minutes have a design and begin remodeling. Previous software would take 2-3 hours to create the design and then I would be extremely limited it the customization or the customization was so complex that unless I used the software daily I had to relearn to accomplish the required customization. I would highly recommend this software to anyone that has never used design software or is currently using another package.
You will never go back.

PROS: very full featured; easy to use; great price
CONS: my version lacked the insert floor option, but customer support solved that problem for me. Manual could be better.
BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend this product.
OK, it's not SolidWorks or AutoCAD, but who needs or wants a general full-featured solid modeling program with a big price tag and big learning curve to accomplish a very specific task - home design. The HGTV product is fairly simple to use and amazingly complete. You build 3D models with simple tools and then you can do realistically rendered views and walk-throughs. Once the model is complete, you can produce 2D dimensioned floorplans and elevation drawings from it. I am using it for high-level design and will leave the rest to an architect but you can do everything yourself including framing, flooring, roofing, electrical and plumbing.
I encountered a bug in the version I received, it omitted the menu item to insert floors (although floors are automatically inserted by default, just don't delete them). When I contacted Nova Software, they acknowleged the problem and upgraded me at no cost to their companion Platinum version that includes landscaping.
To use photo-realisitic rendering requires some fairly serious computing power, especially to produce a walk-through, but if you computer is up to it, the results are great. The good news is that you can do 3D views and walk-throughs without the intensive rendering and you can therefore still get a really good view of how your design ideas shape up in 3D.
The manual could be a bit more complete. You will have to do some experimenting with the program to understand how to use some features. For example, you can use an automated wizard to create a basic house with all framing, roofs, ceilings and floors, but you probably won't get exactly what you want. You can do the same thing manually, but the manual is not a great help. I recommend you create a house with the wizard and then view the properties of all the elements created to see what is in the model and what you will need to do on your own.
For the cost this is a fantastic product and very full featured - I highly recommend it.
